HAPPY BIRTHDAY AJOKEADE: YOU DESERVE THE WORLD
I know you’d argue with me on this one, but I really think you deserve the world. It floors me that you’re not even aware of that sometimes.
Actually, you’re not aware of that most of the time. That’s why I’m writing this letter, a simple heartfelt letter to my best friend, to my soulmate, to ‘my person’, to you.
I have to admit that I often catch myself wondering what I did to deserve you. You came just at the right moment in my life, and you’ve stuck around through thick and thin.
I thank God that our paths crossed because you’re the best thing that has happened to me in a long time. Because of you, I’m even more sure that someone’s watching over me from above.
You light up the room the moment you enter it, and you’re so oblivious to that. And it’s so hard to not notice it. It comes naturally to people to shift their attention to you, and you’re not even aware of that.
You’re not one of those attention seekers. You are so down-to-earth and modest. You’re not even trying, and that’s what makes you even more interesting and why people are drawn to you.
People want to be around you. They want to befriend you. They want your energy to transfer to them. And you give them that. You give them that touch of positivity and strength to move on.
You’re the type of person who makes people’s hearts warm whenever they’re around you. You make every person around you feel better without even needing to try hard.
Being kind-hearted comes so naturally to you. And I’m glad I get to be around you and have your kindness warm my heart as well.
See, you’re a person whom someone can only live without if they’ve never lived with them before.
Because once you walk into someone’s life, only then can they realize what it means to have somebody who genuinely cares about them. And they end up needing you.
They end up needing your warmth and your tenderness because it’s so easy to get addicted to it. In this cold world, we all need more people like you.
People need you because you’re genuinely there for them. You are everyone’s shoulder to cry on. You’re their helping hand in their times of need.
You’re the first to fight for the people you care about, and, knowing you, I doubt you’d have to think twice before jumping into the field of battle and defending those who you truly love.
What strikes me the most is your ability to forgive.
You do more than just say they are forgiven—you actually mean it. Even if people break your heart, even if they betray you or hurt you, you always find a way to be the bigger person. You find a way to see past it all and move on.
Sometimes, it takes more time and sometimes, it takes a bit less, but you never see people through their mistakes. You never hold grudges or hold their slips against them for eternity.
Because you love to believe there is more to them than their mistakes. You believe everyone deserves to be loved, and everyone deserves a second chance.
You find hope in people where nobody would ever think of looking, and you keep fighting when any normal person would’ve given up a long time ago.
You find a reason to believe in people even when they don’t believe in themselves. You’re always there for them even if they aren’t always there for you. And you care for them even when they forget about themselves.
I can’t remember a single person you let down because you’re always there to offer people your arms to hug them, your heart to show compassion and your presence to listen to them and show them they’re not alone.
You don’t let go of people—you always find a reason to stay and try again. You give your love without holding anything back because love, for you, isn’t an option; love is your mantra, and you decide to give all of your love to others so purely and without even expecting anything in return.
That’s how selfless you are. That’s what’s so amazing about you. And that’s what I love the most about you—and the fact that you always wear your heart on your sleeve.
It’s not only other people who need you. I need you, too, and more than you can wrap your mind around.
You see, you’re way stronger than you realize. You’re a fighter, and yet you’re so sensitive and kind. You’re funny and you’re smart. You’re beautiful, and you’re breathtakingly powerful.
You are all of this; you are the whole universe in just one person. I have never met anyone as well rounded as you are.
You impact people in a way that makes them want to be the best versions of themselves. They strive for more. They reach for the stars.
You influence people. You change them for the better in a way, but please don’t ever let people change you. Don’t let them ruin your kindness or your spark.
Don’t let them turn you into something different or make you believe you should be somebody else because out of all the people I know, you are the one that God created almost perfectly.
You’re the easiest person to love on this Earth, and don’t let anyone convince you differently.
Don’t ever change. Don’t give up on the person you are, and please never give up on me either. Because you are a true blessing in my life. You’re my sister, perhaps not by blood, but definitely by heart.
You are an angel sent from heaven to watch over me.
I really do believe that. When I was at my lowest point, you helped me pick myself up. I will never forget that.
You were that voice of reason which reminded me to love myself more. I was drowning in self-pity and my insecurities. I was wounded by other people, by toxic relationships, and I thought I wasn’t enough.
But in your eyes, I was and I am the best there is, and somewhere along the way, I began to believe it myself.
When I had it good in my life, you were the only one happy for me while everybody else was envious.
I know that can be harder than being with somebody through bad times. People find comfort in the misery of others because they realize that they are not alone in theirs. In a way, that’s human and pretty normal.
But you are better than that. No matter in which stage of your life you are, you are always happy for others or you empathize with their sadness. It’s a gift—I’m telling you.
I think all the world needs is more people like you. It would be a better place to live.
I know you don’t see yourself in the way I’ve written here, but that’s only because you have never looked at yourself through my eyes. You do deserve the world because you’re there for people who need you, and you make this world a truly better place.
If you are still wondering why am I writing this letter to the best friend a person can ask for, there are a couple of reasons.
First, I want to tell you that I see you. And I admire everything you’ve showed me up till this moment. I admire your kindness, your courage and your drive.
Even when you fall, you never stay down. And whenever I fall, you pull me up. And I want to thank you for choosing me and being part of my life. I am eternally grateful to have someone like you in my life.
I want to remind you that you deserve so much more than you are getting. I want to remind you that you can’t just keep on giving—you have to take something back from time to time.
If you exhaust yourself emotionally, there will be nothing to give to others nor to yourself. You can’t pour from an empty cup.
Remember that you deserve the same love, respect and kindness you are pouring onto others. Remember that you need to things for yourself, too. Remember that I am here for you just as much as you are for me.
